Google Glory | Part 2 – Driving Blog Traffic That Won’t Quit

Boost your blog’s visibility and attract more readers with powerful backlink strategies. Learn how to build high-quality backlinks, leverage guest posting, and utilize social media to drive traffic and improve your SEO.

Along Came An Algorithm

Before 2000, search engines were all about ranking sites based on On-page content, domain names, and site structure.

Then along came Google’s PageRank algorithm, with its shiny new take on information retrieval, changing the game and making SEO all about what Google thinks.

Today, Google ranks pages based on keywords (which is why optimizing On-Page still matters), but it also does more. It checks how popular you are by analyzing the quality and quantity of external links pointing your way. And it rewards the cool kids on the internet, you know, the ones everyone’s talking about (and actually visiting).

A ‘backlink’ is basically a link from one website to another.

In a world where everyone chases links insanely, nailing those backlinks can really catapult you to the top.

You see, most content out there – 94% of blog posts – get lost! There are very few people sharing, talking about, or linking to them. The remaining few stand out – and when you really dig in, you’ll see they’ve got some 40 to 50 backlinks pointing to their main page, and up to 100 to other individual web pages.

Think of it like this: Every backlink is a rave review from another website, telling Google, “Hey, this blog is legit! Check it out!”

  • More rave reviews = Higher ranking on Google.
  • Higher ranking = More eyeballs on your content.
  • And more eyeballs = More potential customers!

Building killer backlinks (and upping your social media game, if you want to), is how you master ‘Off-Page’ SEO.

The best examples of backlinking aren’t in-your-face.

See how Vogue does it. In an article on ‘What To Wear This Fall,’ Vogue might link to Net-a-Porter: “Shop this season’s must-have pieces on Net-a-Porter.” This kind of backlink drives traffic to Net-a-Porter and boosts its SEO by signaling its credibility to search engines as a trusted site for fashion.

Before you go backlink shopping, however, know that not all backlinks are created equal. Some are worth their weight in gold, while others are about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

You’ve got your “VIP” Backlinks – ones that come from high-authority websites in your industry (aka, websites with high ‘Domain Authority’ or ‘DA’). Getting these might be a little tricky. You’ve got to persuade someone important to link to your site, and they’ll probably want something in return.

Then you’ve got your “Avoid Like the Plague” Backlinks – these come from spammy, low-quality websites that will actually HURT your SEO, and you don’t want to be associated with them.

Somewhere in between, there are “Good Enough” Backlinks from decent websites relevant to your niche. They’re no VIPs, but they’ll give your SEO a nice little boost.

1. Craft Content That Begs to Be Shared

Only 1.3% of articles snag a whopping 75% of all social shares! So, if you want to build backlinks, you’ve got to make your content irresistibly linkable. We’re talking about content that people can’t help but share.

Think mind-blowing blog posts, hilarious infographics, ultimate how-to guides, or videos that would make even a cat meme jealous.

Here’s what hurts: Securing a single backlink can sometimes take months of outreach and networking!

That’s why many blog owners opt to just buy them instead.

Beware of sketchy packages that sell links. Seriously, search engines are smarter than you think, and if you associate with shady backlinks, they’ll penalize your website faster than you can say “black hat SEO.”

Focus on building (or buying) genuine, high-quality backlinks. Look for sites in your industry with strong Domain Authority, and do it SLOWLY.

Your website (and your sanity) will thank you for it.

Its best to go for links from news and media portals – you know, the ones Google recognizes and trust.

The trick is to make it look like you earned it.

3. Team Up – Guest Posts & Partnerships

Guest blog posts might feel like a workout, but they’re one of the best ways to score backlinks for your small business website.

Here’s the deal: you write a blog for a site you’re eyeing, sneak in a natural link to your own site, and boom—backlink secured. It’s a win-win; they get content, you get the SEO boost.

Got a business association membership? You might just snag a backlink from them too.

Find broken links on other websites in your industry, reach out to the website owner, and offer to replace the broken link with a link to your awesome content.

They’ll love you for it, and your website will thank you for the backlink boost.

  • The Skyscraper Technique
The skyscraper technique is basically SEO one-upmanship. Find top-ranking content that’s got all the backlinks and see what it’s missing. Outdated info? Gaps in stats? Then, create your own content that’s bigger, better, and shinier, and watch as those backlinks come your way.
  • Get Mentioned in “Best of” Lists
Who doesn’t love a good “best of” list? If you can get your product or service featured in one, you’ll get a shiny backlink in the process.
  • HARO (Help a Reporter Out)
HARO was like matchmaking for reporters and experts. You sign up, and when journalists are hunting for quotes and insights, they might reach out to you. If your expertise makes it into their article, you get a backlink. This great service is closed permanently since December 2024 but why not search for alternatives?

Getting Really Social

To up your Off-page SEO game using Social Media, peek at GoPro’s playbook.

GoPro turns its fans (20.8 million followers) into content creators by urging them to share their footage with #GoPro.

The result? A flood of user-generated content and endless tagging.

Those awesome user posts don’t just sit there—they rack up likes, comments, and shares boosting GoPro’s visibility and scoring them backlinks from sites. All those shares and backlinks signal to search engines that GoPro is the real deal; more buzz means higher search rankings and more organic traffic.

Share really good content on social media platforms like a boss, and watch those backlinks (and website traffic) roll in.

Takeaways

Congratulations, you’re now armed with the knowledge to make your blog the envy of the internet.

So get those backlinks going. Choose the right platforms to boost your visibility. Collaborate with other bloggers. Leverage PR for extra buzz, engage on social media, and tap into influencer marketing to amplify your impact.
